In 1918, J.J. Curry attended Iowa State College as a 26-year-old farmer looking for new ideas to use on the South Dakota farm that his family homesteaded in June of 1861. As a young farmer, J.J. strived to increase his agricultural knowledge and, at that time, Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) offered winter courses, which allowed farmers to take classes while avoiding the busy planting season.

In 1935, J.J. attended a winter course at Iowa State, where a new type of seed corn was introduced. The new seed corn featured hybridization, a new technology of corn breeding. That year, J.J. saw an opportunity for a better product and more profitable yields for his fellow farmers. So he sold the new hybrid seed corn and encouraged his peers to test it against their bin run seed. The results were immediately evident: farmers saw an increase of 40 to 60 bushels per acre higher than open pollinated corn.

From there, J.J. started selling hybrid seed corn to neighbors and expanded production at Elk Point, S.D. His sons, Jim and Ed, joined the company in the early 1950s and continued producing and selling hybrid seed corn, expanding into the tri-state area of South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.

As the 1970s and 80s experienced irrigation expansion, especially from center pivots, the development of irrigation in Curry Seed territories led to record sales. During that

time, Jim’s son, Kevin, along with Ed’s two sons, Bill and David, joined Curry Seed, expanding the sales area and developing more production capacity.

In the spring of 2008, Pioneer announced that the Curry Seed Brand was purchased from the Curry family. Continued regional seed research has proven that locally selected seeds are able to make sizable improvements over nationally developed lines — which is why the Curry family continues to raise hybrid seed corn at Elk Point, S.D. for the Curry Seed Brand.

Today, Curry Seed remains dedicated to finding every opportunity for better products and more profitable yields. That’s how J.J. Curry did business, and that’s how we’ll keep doing it.

I am the fourth generation to farm my family’s land near Beresford, South Dakota. Production ag has always been a part of my life. Growing up, we raised feeder cattle, lambed out ewes and had a farrow-to-finish hog operation. My dad taught me to take care of any land that feeds your family and encouraged me to pursue my education. So, I headed to SDSU to further my dream of working in agriculture.

Since then, I’ve raised a family with the same appreciation for farming that my father passed on to me. Though my wife, Michelle, and I have moved into town, I continue to farm my family’s land. The farm has become a big test plot for me to learn about new concepts and practices so that I may help dealers and customers in the most practical way—with experience.

I was born into a ranching family located in western South Dakota. We moved to Alcester when I was four, and that’s where I developed a strong appreciation for farming and agriculture.

I have enjoyed many opportunities to work in the ag sector since graduating from SDSU fifteen years ago. My wife and I, along with our two children, currently live in Akron, Iowa, where we also operate a small farm with my brother — which keeps us busy.

The most rewarding part of selecting and managing products for Curry is meeting with, and learning from, dealers and customers within the Curry Seed family.

BRAND CORN PRODUCTS

Flex Ear, 1 = Fixed EarEAR FLEX:

STRESS EMERGENCE: All products are expected to establish normal stands under average soil conditions. Stress emergence is a measure of the genetic ability or potential to emerge in the stressful environmental conditions of cold, wet soils or short periods of severe low temperatures, relative to other Curry brand products. Ratings of 7-9 indicate very good potential to establish normal stands under such conditions; a rating of 5-6 indicates average potential to establish normal stands under moderate stress conditions; and ratings of 1-4 indicate the product has below average potential to establish normal stands under stress and should not be used if severe cold conditions are expected immediately after planting. Stress emergence is not a rating for seedling disease susceptibility, early growth or speed of emergence.

MID-SEASON BRITTLE STALK: Ratings determined by frequency and severity of stalk snappage at lower to middle stalk internodes from conditions usually favored by rapid or optimum growth. Relative response of products can be affected by planting date, stage of growth, rate of growth, wind severity and other variables. Scores derived from both natural observations and artificial evaluation immediately prior to tasseling. NOTE: Scores do not reflect snappage enhanced by or due to herbicide interaction. The use of growth regulator herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba can increase the brittle snap potential of

corn products. Products with lower brittle stalk ratings will require more caution and have a higher risk associated with the use of growth regulator herbicides. Early application, proper rates and application methods, along with both product and herbicide selection can help reduce this risk. BRITTLE STALK PRECAUTION: In areas with higher potential for brittle stalk breakage, growers must balance the risk of planting products with brittle stalk ratings of less than 4 against the overall performance of more resistant products with higher ratings. All products have a period of susceptibility to brittle stalk. Products with below average ratings may have a longer period of susceptibility, or may experience more severe breakage relative to products with higher scores during period of susceptibility.”

GRAY LEAF SPOT PRECAUTION: Avoid planting products with a lower gray leaf spot (GLS) rating in continuous corn fields that have a history of GLS infection, unless tillage operations that bury significant amounts of corn residue and inoculum are practiced.

NORTHERN LEAF BLIGHT CAUTION: In conditions where northern leaf blight (NLB) risk is high, growers should consider planting only products with at least moderate NLB resistance ratings of 4 or higher.

HEAD TYPE: 9 = Open; 1 = Compact. PLANT HEIGHT: 9 = Very Tall; 1 = Short.

HEAD SMUT RESISTANCE: Rated for resistance to Races 1, 2, 3, 4.

HEAT RESPONSE: 1 = Delays, least responsive; 9 = Responsive, usually heads under stress. Grain sorghum hybrids react differently to environmental conditions. The characteristics used to describe this environmental reaction are “heat response” and “color score.” Either trait is desirable in grain sorghum hybrids. Yearly environment will dictate which characteristic benefits production. NOTE: Heat response and color scores express characteristics that could be favorable or unfavorable, depending on environmental conditions. Characteristics should be compared to hybrids of similar maturity group only.

COLORING: 1 = Delays maturity; 9 = Very responsive, matures under cool conditions. Grain coloring in sorghum hybrids is closely associated with physiological maturity. Hybrids which are “early to color” are more responsive to cool temperatures than other sorghum hybrids. Under cool conditions from weather or late planting, these hybrids tend to mature and dry down rather than delay maturity.

2017 SEED TREATMENTS

CurryCoat is a seed-applied, performance-enhancing technology developed specifically for Curry® Seed

and is offered on Curry brand seed products.

CORNStandard Rate CurryCoat seed treatment for corn is a powerful combination of Poncho® 500/VOTiVO®, Maxim® Quattro and Raxil® seed treatment. CurryCoat is offered on corn at no added charge.

CURRYCOAT FORMULA

Poncho®/VOTiVO® Insecticide • Applied directly to the seed, Poncho®/VOTiVO®

insecticide protects the whole plant, above and below ground, preventing damage to early-season seedlings and roots before pests can strike.

• Employs a biological mode of action with a unique bacteria strain that lives and grows with young roots, creating a living barrier that prevents nematodes from causing damage. It also has a systemic agent that’s absorbed by new roots immediately, providing control of many critical early season insect pests.

Maxim® Quattro Fungicide • A four-way formulation, this seed-applied fungicide contains four active ingredients to provide broad-spectrum protection against early-season diseases.

Raxil® Fungicide • Controls diseases like loose smut, common bunt and common root rot.

SOYBEANSCurry brand soybeans ordered with CurryCoat will be treated with a new performance-enhancing technology called EverGol® Energy fungicide along with Biostacked seed treatment, Gaucho® insecticide and Allegiance® fungicide. Additional charges will apply.

CURRYCOAT FORMULA

EverGol Energy Fungicide • A next-generation technology from Bayer CropScience,

EverGol Energy fungicide has multiple modes of action, including a new mode that provides enhanced protection against a broad spectrum of early season diseases such as Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Botrytis cinerea and Phomopsis longicolla.

Biostacked • Stimulates rhizobia to produce the biochemical factors shown to improve root nodulation. Nodulation improves nitrogen fixing ability, which enhances nutrient uptake and overall plant performance.

Gaucho® Insecticide • This seed-applied insecticide provides unmatched protection against the worst early season pests.

Allegiance® Fungicide • Aids in the fight against stand-reducing diseases such as Rhizoctonia and Fusarium.

NEW iLeVO® Soybean Seed Treatment OptionThe ONLY seed treatment solution for soybean Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and activity against nematodes.

• Early Plant Protection

• Increased Plant Health

• Increased Yields

• Activity Against SDS and SCN
