STRAWBERRY RIDGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK

Happy Valentine’s Day

As most of you know, John Gill, our resident maintenance supervisor retired in January after over 17 years of service. John worked tirelessly to maintain our community and will be missed. Albert Talavera

joined the staff in June 2015 and worked closely with John to ensure a smooth transition. When you see him out in the com-munity be sure and say hello! For our residents with four legged friends, please be sure and keep your pet off other resident lawns when you are walking them. There are common areas in the community that will allow you to let them relieve themselves, but be sure to pick up after them in those areas as well. Pets are acceptable to Management provided they are leashed and attended when outside and confined to your location and common ground areas of the Community. No pet is to be left outside tethered and unattended. Pet droppings are not permitted anywhere within the Community and therefore, you must clean up after your pet. Any resident may be required to permanently remove a pet from the Community, if in the sole discretion of Management, the pet constitutes a nuisance or if this provision is violated

It’s now February and hopefully we are all settling comfortably into 2016. We have enjoyed together our annual New Year’s Party with Smokey and the Angels and the Ladies Auxiliary Spaghetti Supper with Cliff

Ritchie. Great music, great company and great food! On Friday evening, February 12th, the HOA will present Sandy Nitch: A Night of Music and Entertainment at the club-house from 7PM – 10 PM. Sandy has been performing professionally since 2007 and her vocal styling and sensitivity is that of a saxophone player—very smooth. Recently, Sandy began working to create music that can be enjoyed by eve-ryone by incorporating music from multi-generations and giving it her own spin. Sandy brings a mixed bouquet of jazz, blues, and pop with her wherever she goes, but don’t be afraid to ask her and her friends for a little bit of country. Tickets are $7 in advance or $9 at the door. So get your ticket, bring whatever you want to drink and some special snacks, grab your dancing shoes and come to enjoy! Thursday, March 24th is our Annual Vendor Fair from 9AM – 1 PM at the Clubhouse. This is your opportunity to meet people and businesses who offer services and products of special interest to those of us who own manufactured homes and/or are 55 or older. And of course, our famous hot dogs will be available for a delightful lunch that you don’t have to prepare. Finally, the Strawberry Ridge Homeowners Association’s Annual Meeting is scheduled on March 5st at 10 A.M. in the Clubhouse right after our monthly Coffee and Donuts gathering. Elections will be held for three (3) seats on the Board of Directors. Voting members will be receiving information about voting, a sample ballot, and a proxy that can be used for establishing a quorum. As you know, this is the meeting that we must have 30% of voting member to proceed, so please come and join us, or please turn in your proxy ballot to either the Homeowners Office in the Activity Center or at the Sales Office.

CAUGHT BEING GOOD

Many good things occur in Strawberry Ridge every single day. Most of these acts are unrecognized and appreciated by all but the individuals involved. This is the time and place to recognize these acts! Have you caught someone doing some-thing good or helpful to another that should be acknowledged? It need not be a really big thing, just something that is wor-thy of notice and appreciation. Please call or email any Homeowners Association Board member, or email [email protected], or email Bob Burfitt at [email protected] with the name of the person and what they have done that is special. We will acknowledge them in this space, although so many good things are happening by good people at the Ridge, it may take a couple of months before you see your nominee published.

Our first nominee is Barbara Phillips. During October and November, Barbara collected donations from SR residents to purchase turkeys for Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa. This agency’s mission is “to care for the homeless in our communi-ty and those at risk of becoming homeless through services that alleviate suffering, promote dignity, and instill self-sufficiency”. One of the services they provide is the provision of food baskets for needy families for Thanksgiving, including a turkey and all the fixings. Barbara collected $1826 and purchased and delivered 240 turkeys for this effort. WOW!!! Ter-rific job!!! And kudos to all of the residents of Strawberry Ridge who made this donation possible! Gef Smock nominated our second resident. She writes, “Carole Fellicia contributes regularly to the needs of various resi-dents in Strawberry Ridge. Her cheerful personality is genuinely accompanied by a heartfelt chuckle which tells us this happy woman knows her purpose in serving others. She is available always to take a handicapped resident to church weekly; she cares for the medical needs of an elderly resident; she makes herself available to residents who are unable to drive to various appointments; she serves “Meals on Wheels” on Thursdays. Carole is a tender-hearted and caring resi-dent whose contributions to our park are sincerely appreciated, Susan Ambrose tells us “My husband had to be hospitalized in Tampa with an emergency heart issue. We were in the middle of laying large pavers on the side of our home. Tony Casciano came to our home and finished the project, "just being a good neighbor". Christine and Rolando Gomez took care of our dog while I was staying at the hospital with my husband. We are so grateful for these good neighbors who helped us in a time of need.”

Garland McHenry reports “A few years ago I had a heart attack and our friend Don Rackley volunteered to mow our grass while I was out of commission. Since then I have had other health problems and he is still mowing our grass with out charge. He is a kind hearted friend and deserves a lot of recognition.”

There are, of course, many others who offer assistance to those in need in our great community but don’t get the recogni-tion they deserve. We understand they don’t do what they do for recognition but it never hurts to shine a light on them once in a while.

Finally, we have a celebrity in our community and his name is Walter Pearson. Walter moved to StrawBerry Ridge about 5 years ago from Sun City because he is very independent and didn’t need all that help! Today he is 99 years young and will reach that grand old number of 100 on February 5, 2016. Walter spent approximately two years in the Army with the 88th division in Italy. The 88th meets each year in different cities and this year will be in Clearwater. Walter was asked to be the Grand Marshal of the VFW parade in 2015 and he graciously performed his duties there. Walter is still active in a business he created many years ago as a money manager. All in all—he is a heck of a guy.

Walter will celebrate his birthday on February 21st from 2:00 until 4:00 PM in the Activity Center. If you would like to shake hands with a real live Centurion, he would be delighted to see you and answer any questions you have. Mark your calen-dars and come for cake, ice cream, coffee, iced tea and chat with Walter and your neighbors. NO GIFTS, PLEASE

SHRA MEMBERSHIP By: Rose Panella, Membership Chairperson 662-9862

As of this month, we now have a total of 147 paid members. These members will be the ones who will be able to vote on our upcoming election in March 2016. On April 1st., 2016 we will be opening the membership up once again. The cost to join is $6.00 for one year membership which breaks down to 50 cents per month and will expire on 3/31/17. If you join for three years, the membership is $15.00 and comes to 42 cents per month, this membership will expire on 3/31/19. In either case, a new application must be com-pleted. If you need an application you will find a folder outside of the HOA office with applications in it or you can give me a call and I will bring one to your home. Once you have completed the form, the form and money can be dropped in the slot in the HOA door in the event no one is there. I do go in and out of the office quite frequently and will get your form. Once I have it, I will type your new membership card and deliver it to your door.

STRAWBERRY RIDGE WOODWORKERS CLUB By: Bob Burfitt 385-7289(cell)

PANCAKE BREAKFAST AND RAFFLE

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2016

IN THE CLUBHOUSE

STARTING AT 8:00 AM

Each year the Woodworkers Club presents a Pancake Breakfast complete with eggs, sausage, pancakes and all the trim-mings followed by a giant raffle of items we have collected from local business and organizations within StrawBerry Ridge. Over the past few years we have found that residents of the Ridge enjoy the food, the fellowship and especially the prizes..

Here’s how it works: First we offer breakfast tickets to the community from any Woodworker Club member. We all have a supply of tickets which sell for $6.00 each—these tickets are only sold in advance for planning purposes. Then on Saturday morning residents can purchase raffle tickets at the door for $1.00 each. After breakfast (around 9:00 AM) we hold the raf-fle with the last prize being a $100.00 gift card. All in all it’s a great program and you will go home full from breakfast and perhaps a little richer.

The proceeds from this event and our spring garage sale goes to purchase new equipment, replace worn out parts and buy supplies for our Christmas Toy Program. Each year the club designs, makes, and delivers wooden toys for children who otherwise may not receive a gift. Last year we delivered 185 toys to two different organizations who take care of kids. It’s a great feeling and we enjoy the ability to help.

BINGO

By: Dee Costoso 436-0793, Linda Reimert 495-3928, Co-Chairpersons

Well, Wednesday night Bingo is back for 2016 and so are our snow birds. We are only two weeks into the month of Janu-ary, and our attendance has improved. The average attendance was 48 per week. Bingo tickets are sold between 5:45 and 6:45. Bingo games start at 7PM. We play both hard cards and paper cards. Once the 8 games are played on the hard cards, we take a 10 minute break for coffee and snacks. After which, we then play 8 more games on the paper cards. We also need volunteers to help with setup, selling cards, and calling bingo. We have a sign up sheet for this on the selling table. Each week we have a king or queen of the night. The week of 1/6 was Ruth Powers and 1/13 was Jimmy. Come out and join us, you will have a good time. On February 10, we will be holding MARDI GRAS BINGO. Hope to see you all next week at bingo.

FMO NEWS By: Susan Ambrose, District 10 President, Hillsborough County 813-365-1422

We had our District 10 meeting hosted by Strawberry Ridge January 13, 2016.

I am sorry to report it was a very limited turn out from the community as well as the county. This is very concerning to me because of the need to maintain our local presence to support our representatives and our lobbyist at the State Legisla-ture. Without local support in our own community and all the other 55+ communities around the state we will be subject-ed to any number of rising tax issues, increasing lot leases, or being taken advantage by any number of property owners or bills introduced into the legislature that would increase our financial burden as a senior citizen. If you can't support the FMO by your presence at least become a member so your financial interests and home ownership will continue to be rep-resented in Tallahassee. What would our 55+ communities be like without the 723 State Statute? Property owners would have free reign to increase all costs to or capital improvements done. Things that are currently included in our lot leases would now become another "bill" we would have to pay separately including the lot rent. An example would be no gar-bage pick up included in the rent....you would pay for it separately, taxes would become a separate bill and I could go on and on with the endless possibilities of added expenses you would incur. Many would probably loose their homes with the added expenses of what is called "unbundling". Someone has to watch the" HEN HOUSE." That is what the FMO does for the members and residents of the Manufactured Home Communities. Many of our seniors are still working at least part time to make ends meet, our time is limited. PLEASE support the FMO with your membership and/or presence at monthly meetings. If you would like to become a member there are applications at the clubhouse on the FMO board or call me at 813-365-1422 I will be glad to provide an application delivered right to your home. Information about the monthly meetings are posted on all bulletin boards throughout the parks and on all FMO social media. Meeting information is main-tained on all of the blogs associated with Strawberry Ridge and other communities. Membership is $25 a year and can be paid with a credit card or check. Thank you for any support you can give us.

STRAWBERRY SINGERS

By Sylvia Haywood 436-0387

The singers are singing! Our practice on the March 19th Spring Concert started on January 15th and everyone seemed pleased with the program. We are doing a collection of old favorites and have named the concert “Music, Music, Music” (guess what the first song is???) Just because practice has started does not mean you cannot join us. We meet each Friday at 1:00 PM in the clubhouse and we would love to have you join us. Remember—no try outs—no music to read—just a lot of fun.

PICKLEBALL, ANYONE?

By: Barb Purvis 813 785-8040

Most of our players are back from the north and we are in full swing. We play at the tennis courts on Tues, Thurs, and Sat at 9am. for about 2 hours. If you would like to learn or just watch, come and join us. No experience necessary. Don't be shy! We have paddles and balls to borrow. There is a web site you can go to for rules, strategies and general infor-mation.

There were no two ways about it. Rosie was fat. Very fat. “Martha”, said Rosie to her best friend, “it was terrible what happened yesterday after the birthday party. You know how half of the birthday cake was left over? Well, I knew Bob would be fuming at me for eating it, with my diet and all, but I couldn’t help myself, it started with just a small nibble and before I knew it the whole cake was gone!.” “Oh my!” clucked Martha, “was Bob really upset?” “He never found it”, responded Rosie with a full double chin smile, “I just baked another cake and ate half of it!”
