Starting Aright
Staying Focused
Studying at College
STARTING ARIGHT: Four Assumptions
1. You qualify to begin the race
2. Strenuous preparations have been invested in one’s readiness to participate in the game of academia
3. You are conversant with the rules of engagement
4. You have the potential to become a world class winner
(1Co 9:24)
Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize.
Shall we pray…
STARTING ARIGHT: Does the fastest always win?
What went wrong? A FALSE START !!!
Important Lesson of life…
Ecc 9:11 … in this world fast runners do not always win the races, … the brave do not always win the battles. The wise do not always earn a living, intelligent people do not always get rich, and capable people do not always rise to high positions …

• START THE FIRST SEMESTER/TERM ARIGHT by developing your study strategy 15
16
Developing Study Strategies
Suggests …1. A Process: It calls for a daily investment of personal effort and commitment. It cannot be attained in JUST ONE DAY.
17
Developing Study Strategies
2. YOU are the MAIN ACTOR in the drama of studying.
YOU have to get actively engaged in the business of developing effective study strategies or habits.
It is NOT your TUTOR’S responsibility.
University teaches you to think for yourself
Universities are set up to facilitate learning.
Distinction about teaching and learning in
the university
Study at School is teacher-led but in the university the learning model is student–led
In school, all that you need to know is covered in your classes.
This is not so at the university; the lecturer will provide a highly synthesised ‘map’ of the specific subject area being covered.
You will be expected to explore the map in more detail.
Lecturing, among others, is the main teaching method used in a University.
Higher Education is a “DIY” process, but that is not to say that you are entirely on your own.
The Lecturers, the Library Staff and those in specialised departments are there to help you when you need them.
But you do have to learn how to use what is there, and do not be afraid to ask for help.
Normally, there is a series of weekly lectures throughout each unit of your course.
Each successive lecture deals with a different sub-discipline of the main subject area.
Lectures represent the planned route through the subject study unit
The contents of the lectures themselves broaden the foundation on which the unit programme is based.
Every lecture will introduce you to the underlying theory, analyse and explain complex issues and generally add to your knowledge of the central framework of the whole course.
ASSESS YOUR CLASS PROFILE
22
1.VISIONARY ACHIEVERS
2.JUST-PASSING-THROUGH S
1. Determined to succeed and to attain goals set for themselves.
2. Avoid trouble that steals their quality time.
23
VISIONARY ACHIEVERS
2. ‘JUST-PASSING-THROUGHS’Do not as yet have any vision or
mission for being at the University/ High School. They are
just ‘walking through’ the University/ High School.
They waste time; are distracted by the apparent freedom in the uni.
24
DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS - How?
1. Focus Your Efforts
No matter your problems and limitations, your aspirations or whatever, your primary goal NOW should be efficiently handling your school work.
25
2. Attend every Class
26
•An hour lecture a student skips can never be redeemed.•It creates extra work for the student and not his/her classmates•Borrowing lecture notes to copy, reading a related textbook, which you did not personally process can be difficult and an avoidable waste of time. 27
AVOID PROCRASTINATION28
3. Manage your Time Efficiently
29
You need to turn it right to manage it right!
30
Is your sense of time turned upside down?
