Industry

I took this picture at Ashiya-hama looking out towards Rokko Island during the summer of 2011. This shows industry because there is a factory of some sort located right next to the coast. It also shows cranes in the distance which are also located next to the coast for industrial use. It is extremely important for industries to be located next to the coast as it makes imports and exports of resources extremely easy and cheap.

Tourism and Recreation

I took this photo at Ashiya-hama looking out towards Rokko Island during the summer of 2011. This shows tourism and recreation because there are people enjoying the walk next to the beach as well as some people fishing. There is also a parking lot on the right which is for tourism. Being next to the coast for tourism is important because many coastlines have beaches, and people love beaches (many hotels are located next to coasts). Lots of people would go to certain places just because there are beaches. It is also important for recreation because there are lots of activites that one can do such as fishing, and beach volleyball, which can only be done next to coastlines.

Transport

I took this photo at Ashiya-hama looking out towards the mountains during the summer of 2011. This shows transport because there is a large vessel that is using the coast as a dock to go somewhere else. Without any coasts, there would be no convenient place for ships to dock. Coasts are very important for transportation because using the waters instead of the land cuts down the costs for transportation significantly. Although it takes more time, shipping using a ship is a lot cheaper than shipping by train or any other forms.

Settlements

I took this photo at Ashiya-hama looking out towards the mountains during the summer of 2011. This shows settlements because there are large apartment buildings and houses next to the coastal area. Coasts are a very desireable location for many people, and are therefore good locations for the real estate business. Coastal areas enable people to play lots of recreational activities that one can’t normally do somewhere else. Lots of people would prefer to live near the coasts (around 66% of population lives within 120 km of a coast).

Resource Extraction

I took this photo at Ashiya-hama during the summer of 2011. This picture shows resource extraction because it shows a drill of some sort extracting resources from the ocean. It is important for drills like these to be located near the coasts so it can be easily accessed. It is also easier to transport the resources extracted to the industry if they were close together (which is why most industries are also near the coastline). The resource extraction facilities and industries work hand in hand.

Wildlife Habitats

I took this photo at Ashiya-hama during the summer of 2011. This shows wildlife habitat because there is a small crab living on the rocks right next to the coast. Coasts are very important for wildlife habitats because it is one of the only places where the land is so close to the ocean. Coasts are great nesting grounds for several animals such as turtles, where they can lay their eggs. There tends to be a smaller human footrint in natural coasts than deeper inland which is also important for wildlife habitats.

1st – industries.Industries next to coastlines not only makes imports and exports of goods a lot easier, but also a lot cheaper. The price affects everyone including me, and so the cheaper it is to produce, manufacture and ship the product, the cheaper the final price will be.

2nd – TransportationAs I have just mentioned, transporting by sea is very cheap and easy. What makes this possible are coasts which allow ships and vessels to dock and get prepared for the journey.

3rd - Wildlife HabitatsAs natural coasts are becoming less and less common, it is important to let the wildlife have parts of the coasts as well, because they have an effect on the whole ecosystem which will ultimately affect us. If the crabs or small fish have no place to live, there will be no food for the bigger fish in the oceans, which means there will be no food for humans to eat. The coast is often a ideal place to live for many animals because it is one of the few places in the world where the land is so close to the sea.

4th Resource ExtractionJust like the industries, it is important for resource extraction plants to be near the coast so they can easily transport the materials to the industries quickly and cheaply. It also makes it more easily accessable for workers if anything goes wrong. Yet, because it is still very cheap to transport the material to the industries, not all resource extraction facility has to be near the coast.

5th Tourism and Recreation

Coasts means beaches which people love. The reason for why Hawaii is such a popular place to go is because it is almost all coast. There are several beaches which are the perfect place for vacation. Hotels and businesses take advantage of the popularity of the beaches which is why coasts are so important for recreation. Another factor that plays a part in the beaces being so popular, is the types of recreational activities one can do near the beaches. Fishing, jet skiing, and playing on the beach is not something that one can do at their homes.

6th – SettlementsJust like how tourism is popular near coasts, people prefer to live near the beach as well. The real estate business can greatly increase the prices of homes near the ocean just because they are near the ocean. Because having beaches near the ocean is not really beneficial or necessary for the entire community, I put this as the least important to be next to the beach in my list
