At Sir William Gage, we will be continuing our annual tradition of Passion Week, when we allow students to choose an activity (a passion) that is organized by teachers, and experience it over three full days (Tuesday April 24 th -Thursday April 26 th ). PURPOSE

Lion King Jr.

This year, plans and preparations are already underway for our school musical; Lion King Jr. Therefore, some of the activities happening during education week will be focused on preparing for this performance that will take place the week of May 7th to 10th. Students involved in acting, singing, dancing, make-up, tech crew, construction and art will be using their passions to contribute to the production of Lion King Jr.

PROCEDURE

1. Friday March 9th: Passion descriptions go home. Please read the descriptions for the passions with your child and decide upon their top three choices. Please factor any additional costs into your decision making. Note: Students will be involved in ONE activity over the three days.

2. Tuesday March 20th: Google form go live at 4pm. Rank your TOP 3 choices by logging into the Physed Google Classroom (class code: sjjyhd ) and completing the Google Form posted. Passion enrolment will be considered on a first come-first-served basis, so please complete the Google Form as soon as possible.

3. Wednesday March 21st – 23rd: Announcement updates. Since each passion has a maximum capacity, students can tell which options are no longer available, as they will be removed as an option from the Google form once at capacity. In the announcements we will update students with a current list of which Passion options are full and at capacity.

4. Thursday March 22nd: Google Form closes at 6 pm. Please ensure your choice has been submitted by this deadline, or you will be placed in any available passion.

Inner andOuter

Beauty

Exploring your Inner and Outer Beauty through Wellness. Students will engage in physical activity (ZUMBA) and swimming at the YMCA with a certified instructor.

Additional Costs: $20.00 per student

DIY Projects

Have you ever looked at your phone, pencil case, room or locker and thought, how can I be more organized? Or, how can I personalize these things in order for them to represent my personality and my unique self?! DIY, the act of repairing, modifying or creating something on your own and without paying for the expertise of someone else to do it for you. Come learn about DIY projects that you can use to enhance your own space and help create a final DIY project to improve the space of a group of people who might not have the ability to do it themselves!.

Additional Costs: $15.00 per student for covering all building materials.

Knitting & Crocheting

Knitting and crochet are timelessly favoured pastimes and creative endeavours. Learn (or brush-up on) basic stitches used to create simple garments. Needles are available, yarn will be supplied.

Our aim is to make garments to outfit the cast of Fame Jr., such as leg warmers and headbands. In addition, we also have the opportunity to contribute knitted caps to a community knitting project to support newborn babies at local hospitals.

Additional Costs: $9:00 per student

Art Attack Calling all creative and crafty students! Art Attack invites those who are looking to explore their artistic ability through various art projects. Get ready to unleash your creativity!

What’s in the Lyrics? Music is a common part of our everyday lives and in our society. But are you really listening? Throughout this workshop you will have an opportunity to learn about lyrics and song writing in various forms. We will discuss and dissect the lyrics that you listen to. You will be challenged to create a soundtrack of your life. If you are a new, or a seasoned lyricist, you can work on your craft and hone your skills with the help of a local Hip Hop artist. Come and explore the power of spoken word. By the end of the three days, you will record and present an original piece. Join us as we explore the power of words. Must have your own device

Identity Through

Film

There is an I in film, but where am “I”: Examining the construction of identity through film. Representation is defined as “the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way.” The impact of seeing yourself represented in pop culture and the media starts as early as age four or five, when kids are becoming interested in superheroes, princes, and princesses. Representation is still important in older years as everyone deserves to be represented and have a role model that is like them. This 3 day workshop will allow you to critically analyze and discuss the intricacies of film and how your identity is present within it.

Additional Costs: $20 per student.

A taste of Taiwan

and Japan

Explore the different cultures of Taiwan and Japan through food making/sampling (ex: sushi, bubble tea), history, language (speaking and writing), and hands-on activities (ex: Goju-ryu style Karate at the Academy of Martial Arts in downtown Brampton).

Additional Costs: $10 per student.

Books to Movies

Do you enjoy reading a good book and then watching it come to life in a movie, well then Books into Movies is the Passion for you. We will look at 2 popular kids books that have been turned into movies and evaluate the differences and similarities. Meet a film director and author who will discuss the process of bringing a book to the big screen all while enjoying movie treats and creating your own book into movie or movie into book.

Bohemian Inspired

Holistic & Wellness

Promoting self reflection, goal setting & relaxation techniques. Each student will be making their own dream catcher, bath bombs and monogrammed name letter to take home to use to benefit their mental health. This is not only for female students. Variations can be made specifically for males.

Additional Costs: $30 per student.

Planning to Play

The steps behind the development of your favourite video games. Try your hand at planning out and creating your own.

The Science of

Cooking is an art but baking is science. Learn how to bake a variety of delicious snacks while you investigate the scientific principles that make your favourite baked goods possible. Determine the effects of different binding agents, risers, and fats while creating commonly enjoyed treats. Learn a variety of recipes for breads, cakes, and cookies, as well as how to modify recipes to make them your own.

Additional Costs: $10.00 per student will cover all baking ingredients and materials.

BakingLearning Through Games

Do you have a passion for board games? Have you ever wanted to learn about cultural low-organization games? In this passion you’ll learn about how board games are made, how board games can be educational, and the many types of games that exist without the use of technology!

Claymation Watch your imagination come to life in Claymation! This passion combines hands-on work with art and technology. You will get to design a storyline, scene/set, and make characters out of clay to create your own animated short!

Triple Threat

(Lion King Jr.)

Are you an actor/singer/dancer involved in Lion King Jr.? If so, this is the passion for you! You have automatically been accepted, approved, look no further for your passion choice.

Makeup & Fashion

Do you enjoy developing your own personal look? Do you love fashion design, hair, and make-up? Well fashion passion is the place for you. We will be creating our own fashion portfolios and exploring the world of beauty vloging, especially with YouTube.

Additional Costs (in cash): $5 fee for traveling to BCC mall as part of our preparation for make-up/hair looks.

AV & Tech Crew

Can you move lightning quick? Be silent like a ninja? Can you work as a key player on a team? If you can do all this and are willing to learn then CREW is for you. Learn how to change sets and scenes, learn to operate lights, learn how to use mid frequency sweep! Serious workers are who we are looking for.

Artistic Set Design

Do you like to paint? Would you like to learn more about painting techniques? Join the crew for Lion King JR as we prepare large-scale set paintings for our school play! Our goal is to transport the audience into another land with bold and vibrant sets.

Mask

Making

Have you ever envied wizards for being able to make inanimate objects come to life? Well, join the Mask Making Crew to hone your creative powers and see your inventions come to life on stage during the school production of Lion King! Also included is a trip to the Living Arts Centre for inspiration.
