Amy VanDeVelde National Communications Program ManagerThe OASIS Institutewww.oasis.org

I am proud to serve on the AAPAA panel and actively collaborate with AT&T to meet people where they find themselves with technology in our digital society. My introduction to accessibility issues was in 1989 when I studied Recreation for Special Populations under Dr. Patricia Malik at Illinois State University. It was a pivotal experience in my undergraduate career and prepared me for helping loved one live well with acquired disabilities. In my current work managing the Oasis Connections program, I see the critical and growing need for digital readiness, particularly among the underserved, as well the value of technology to improve the health and lives of mature adults, including reducing social isolation. Technology is changing as rapidly as the population of our globe is aging. Over 10,000 people turn 65 daily and this trend will

continue for the next two decades. Mature adults are capable and eager adopters of technology when they see 6.

how it helps them stay connected to loved ones, conduct personal business and pursue their personal interests. Making technology accessible doesn’t just help mature adults or people with disabilities—it creates engaging, helpful and stimulating possibilities and connections for us all.

Lorraine Clayton National PresidentAT&T Employee Resource Group - Ability

It began with my deaf cousin who is now blind. My neighbor had developmental delays and my mom had Alzheimer’s. My roots began early for my passion for those with disabilities. While working at the Nokia, I helped ensure their phones met criteria for deaf/hard-of-hearing, dexterity, blind/low vision, and cognitive challenges.

Joining AT&T in 2014, I became an Ability member, VP Operations and now National President. We created a workshop for those with early-stage memory loss to show how devices set appointment reminders, use walking navigation, and attach photos to contacts for easier recognition of who was calling. I was honored to be one of ten AT&T employees

to give a TEDx talk which highlighted this initiative. That talk garnered so much interest in Alzheimer’s awareness, we created an internal support group for employee caregivers.

Recently, we’ve partnered with American Airlines to help children with autism feel a bit more comfortable flying. Also, we’ll be kicking off volunteer opportunities nationwide with Special Olympics. These are some of the initiatives our Ability ERG has embraced. I’m honored to be a champion for people with disabilities and the people they love.
