MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT My sincere greetings to all my friends, the members of USIAMAS! As you are aware, I have just made a come-back as the President of USIAMAS since June 2015 after an absence of about six years. I was happy to find it thriving under the leadership of Dato’ Seri Khalil Hussain, the former President. I would first of all like to share with you the thought processes that had gone through my mind before accepting this lofty position at this stage of my life. I had to ask myself three basic questions. (1) Was I really willing to take on this responsibility after such a long absence? (2) If I said ‘yes’, would I have the capacity to carry out the duties as expected by the members? (3) And lastly, if I had the will and the capacity, would I get the support from the members? The third question was very crucial because while the first two referred to me as an individual and I could certainly decide for myself, the last depended very much on the members themselves. In this respect I was not looking at the number of votes at the General Meeting but more importantly, would the members join me in making USIAMAS the premier NGO on ageing in this country, as was our aspirations when it was first established? I was given some assurance and with that, I accepted the nomination. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members for their faith and trust in me and I promise to do my very best during the tenure of my presidency. Datuk (Dr) Abdullah Malim Baginda HEY! Now that I am in position, let me briefly share with you what I have in mind in taking USIAMAS to a higher level. Let us first refer to the objectives as clearly described in our Constitution because that should be our guiding light or beacon. We should be guided by them and accordingly develop appropriate programme of activities around them.

Although we are a service organisation, we should not forget to serve ourselves, the members, as well because we are also part of the target group. I would like to see many more members coming forward and be involved in the activities that could bring some inner satisfaction.

We can be actively running projects upon projects, but if they are only known among us I would not consider them successful. One of the ingredients for success in today’s world is to let other people know what we are doing. As such, we must inform the public of all our activities big and small and in this respect there are myriads of opportunities and avenues to do so.

With your full support, I am certain that we will achieve our goals. Let us put our shoulders to the wheel and together we will succeed. InsyaAllah.

The Colours of the Logo, which consists of red, yellow, blue and white are derived from the Malaysian Flag thus representing Malaysian pride and identity.

The heart in the logo represents peace towards humanity and the world and caring for fellow senior citizens and bringing calm, harmony and serenity to all and sundry.

The 5 glowing ‘fingers’ represents continuous heartbeat - an active heart, active lifestyle and longevity. The 5 fingers also indicates USIAMAS reaching out to senior citizens, providing a base of interactivity for people from all walks of life and ethnic background. The objective is to promote, enhance and reinforce a productive and meaningful quality of life for all senior aitizens.

Within the heart, the face of a person gazing up, deep in thought signifies wisdom and dignity. It also represents a progressive mind and foresightedness.

The fonts (myriad) used in the logo which is coloured blue signifying integrity and comprehensiveness. It also shows strength and dependability.

The Grandparents Day logo shows a heart in which a wrinkled elderly hand holds the hand of a small baby. This symbolises the inter-generational bond that we hope will be forged whereby the wisdom of the old will blend with the fervour and idealism of the young leading to the emergence of a values-driven community that is caring, proactive, productive and progressive.

EDITORIAL: FORGING A NEW DIRECTION FOR USIAMAS

Datuk (Dr) Abdullah Malim BagindaPresident, USIAMAS

Since its inception in 1991, USIAMAS has undergone a series of transformations both in terms of its name and its focus. Hanging on to the catch-word “USIAMAS” as its brand name it had changed its name twice in view of certain compelling reasons obtaining at the particular point in time. Firstly, it changed into a Foundation in 1996 in the belief that it required a large body of fund in order to get our proposed plan of action moving smoothly. For the second time, it changed into an association in 2002 when it felt a broad base of supporters is needed to carry out our mission.

It is now time to review our position in the light of increasing demand for services for our older population. Over the last 25 years, much has been achieved especially by the public sector in terms of providing facilities that to some extent has reduced the burden of our older persons. But sad to say, the private sector is still dragging its feet in this regard.

However, much more need to be done in view of the fast growing number of older persons in the country. USIAMAS must align itself with the current situation in improving services and providing better facilities for them. A deliberate and systematic attempt towards this end has indeed been started since July 2015. To begin with, through USIAMAS’s initiative, the Government of Malaysia has declared the First Sunday of October be celebrated as the “Grandparents Day”. This is intended to uphold the dignity of our older persons and make them the focal point for care and love in their families. As this is a very new phenomenon, we need to put in more effort to get the support of all sectors in the country. We would like to see the Grandparents Day being celebrated spontaneously as a family event, taking root in the same manner as the “Mothers Day” and “Fathers Day” in due course.

In the next couple of years USIAMAS will attempt to increase the number of its members and supporters on the ground because we would like to focus on several projects that could further enhance the well-being of our older people. There is a great need to share our expertise by providing training in various aspects. We believe that the fastest way of getting ideas across and the transfer of knowledge and skills is by way of training as many of our members, supporters and volunteers as possible. This should enable them to be the prime movers in their respective areas.

While giving attention to those living within the family, we are equally concerned with those older persons who have to spend their life in sheltered accommodations. No doubt that such facilities are readily available upon payment but we would like to ensure that they receive quality care and services, and in dignity, irrespective of the quantum of their payment or even in charity cases.

In the year 2016, USIAMAS would focus on 2 categories of activities. The first relates to celebrations including among others religious festivals, the Grandparents Day and the International Volunteers day. The second category would be to carry out Projects which would include Pre-retirement workshops, Homehelp Services training, Day Centre Management Training, Nursing Home Management Training, Advocacy work, and Institutional Membership Drive.

I would like to call on our members to work together in fulfilling our Mission as declared in our Constitution.

Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest - Larry Lorenzoni

THE GRANDPARENTS DAY CELEBRATION 2015Having graciously accepted the suggestion to celebrate Grandparents Day, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development gave the honour and responsibility to USIAMAS to coordinate the 2015 event together with other relevant NGOs.

In collaboration with the Ministry, a working committee was formed to jointly plan and implement the activities. Members of the committee included Persatuan Kebajikan USIAMAS Malaysia (USIAMAS), Majlis Kebangsaan Persatuan Persatuan Warga Berida Malaysia (NACSCOM), Persatuan Gerontologi Malaysia (GEM), Majlis Pusat Kebajikan Semenanjung Malaysia (MPKSM), Persatuan Bekas Polis, Persatuan Pesara Kerajaan Malaysia, Persatuan Veteran ATM, Persatuan Warga Emas Damansara Jaya (DJSCA), Lembaga Perancangan dan Pembangunan Keluarga Malaysia (LPPKM) and a representative from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development Malaysia (KPWKM).

The committee decided to share responsibilities to carry out several activities as part of the celebrations. These included an Intergenerational Walk, a Colouring Contest, a Drawing Contest, an Essay Writing Contest, a Photography Contest, and Health Check For Senior Citizens,

Intergenerational Walk

Family Tug-of-war in progress

Sunday, 5th of October 2015 turned out to be a grey, humid and extremely hazy morning. It was not the best condition for an outdoor activity. Despite inclement weather, 120 grandparents, parents and children enthusiastically gathered at Taman Jaya in Petaling Jaya to participate in the Inter-generational walk.

The intergenerational walk event was coordinated by NACSCOM (National Council Of Senior Citizen’s Organisations Malaysia). It was not intended to be a competition. Rather its aim was to promote, enhance and reinforce a sense of intergenerational bonding, respect and an awareness of mutual responsibilities between members of an extended family. Participants were also treated to a modest breakfast.

It was hoped that this activity would highlight the importance of the family unit and family values in an age when a tendency towards individualism appears to run rampant. Apart from walking event, the participants enjoyed also the tug-of-war event. Thank you NACSCOM.

Another component of the Grandparents Day celebrations was the drawing contest for children between the ages 10 – 15.

At 10.00 am, contestants gathered at Kompleks Penyayang Bakti at Bandar Sri Damansara and got down to the serious business of drawing. Contestants were required to draw what in their vision represented love within their families.

Many children took part and there was a lot of excitement not only from the children but more so from the parents and grandparents who were anxiously observing. The judges found that many of the artwork were of acceptable quality. Making a choice was difficult. But in the end 5 entries were selected as winners.

While the drawing contest was going on, a colouring contest was also concurrently organised for children between the ages of 5 to 10. Sharp at 10.00 am, the children got down to the serious business of colouring the black and white line drawings watched excitedly by their older siblings, parents and grandparents.

The scene was colourful assuming in overview a carnival atmosphere. The children assumed various seemingly uncomfortable positions leaning on their elbows while colouring their drawings, but after one hour they handed in their masterpieces to be judged. The winners walked away with their well-earned prizes.

Besides the intergenerational walk, the drawing and colouring contest, an Essay writing contest and a photography contest were also carried out. While the drawing and colouring contest were organised by USIAMAS, the Damansara Jaya Senior Citizens Association (DJSCA) undertook to coordinate the photography contest.

Finally, the Family Planning and Development Board joined the bandwagon by providing health check services for Senior Citizens. All the activities were carried out at the Bakti Penyayang Kompleks in Bandar Seri Damansara on the 5th of October 2015.

USIAMAS also celebrated the closure of the Grandparents day on 31st October 2015. The ceremony was held at the Kompleks Bakti Penyayang in Bandar Sri Damansara. Over 250 people turned up. The guest of honour was YB Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. In her speech she graciously congratulated USIAMAS for playing an active role in promoting the welfare of the elderly.

These included the Homehelp Project which it has carried out for the last 10 years which led to the development of a standard operating procedure (SOP) to manage the project and to train volunteers. Another project is the Day Centre for older persons in Bandar Sri Damansara.

Nostalgia … bringing back the P Ramlee era

Despite its short planning horizon and relatively meagre budget the 2015 Grand Parents Day celebrations was a success. Its success can only be attributed to the close cooperation and shared responsibilities of the various organisations involved.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a chance for volunteer-involving organizations and individual volunteers to promote their contributions to development at local, national and international levels. By merging UN support with a grassroots mandate, IVD is a unique opportunity for volunteer-involving organizations to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups and the private sector.

IVD was established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December. In this year’s IVD campaign you will see questions such as “Are you part of the change?”, “Will you take the challenge?“, “Are you ready?” and their answers, as thousands of individuals show how their volunteering is making a contribution and bring to light how volunteering is invaluable in making the world a better place.

This year’s International Volunteer Day was graced by the presence of Dr Zaitol bt Salleh, Head of The Planning and Development Division of the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia. In her speech she stated that on this day, we not only celebrate volunteerism in all its facets, but also pay special tribute to volunteers working to implement the new global goals. She further stated that through volunteerism the person can impact the sustainable development agenda by mobilizing and engaging governments and communities. Continuing her speech, she indicated that there was a growing need for trained volunteers to provide social services in Malaysia. She congratulated USIAMAS for taking the initiative to highlight the significance of the International Volunteers Day which gives prominence to individuals selflessly contributing their time, energies, and skills to change Malaysia for a better future.

Counting among the many trophies he has won are a Gold medal at Limassol, Cyprus in October 2011, another Gold medal at Lviv Ukraine in September 2012, a third Gold medal at the World Cup Masters Weightlifting. He also won a Championship in Penang, Malaysia in November 2013.

And topping it all he again won a Gold medal at IWF World Masters Weightlifting Championships 69.0 kg weight category, 80-84 Age Group at Rovaniemi Finland in September 2015. Not bad for an 83 year old man.Ng Chow Seng a true son of Malaysia has indeed done the Country and its People proud. Just goes to prove that successful ageing is not about the years in your life but the life in your years.

USIAMAS NEGERI SEMBILAN ORGANISES TALK ON HEALTHY AGEING

On the 29TH October 2015 USIAMAS Negeri Sembilan under the stewardship of Tuan Haji Mohd Rawi bin Mahmud in collaboration with the SEHAT Wellness & Medical Centre, organised a talk on Healthy Ageing. The venue was the Wellness & Medical Centre building in Seremban 2.

The event was very well attended by Negeri Sembilan USIAMAS volunteers and it was graced by the presence of Yang Berbahagia, Datuk Abdullah Malim Baginda, President of USIAMAS Malaysia. In his address, he reiterated that being old did not mean we had just to sit down and reminisce on the past. The elderly need to be active. One of the ways to remain active is to join an NGO and involve oneself in a worthy cause. As older persons, we need to capitalise on our assets, our experiences, our wisdom and contribute to the well-being of others.

He congratulated USIAMAS Negeri Sembilan for organising the event. He also thanked Dr Boren Tan, Medical Officer from SEHAT Wellness & Medical Centre for demonstrating such a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. He expressed the hope that a stronger relationship may be forged between USIAMAS and SEHAT Wellness & Medical Centre enabling more collaborative effort to alleviate the problems faced by older persons in Malaysia.

Dr Boren Tan presented a paper on healthy ageing. He outlined among others, 5 areas of concern for making healthy ageing possible, namely, the physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual aspects. It became apparent that one needed a strong discipline to remain healthy and productive.

Another person who presented a paper was Mr Syed Barkat Ali, an USIAMAS Malaysia Executive Committee member. He spoke about the nobility of voluntarism. He suggested that to be an effective volunteer, one had to have a passion and a commitment to service. One had to develop trust. People must first of all trust the volunteer before they would be willing to accept any advice given. Three specific qualities are required to build trustworthiness. One is humanity which is a deep-seated caring attitude towards others who may be even strangers. The second quality is efficacy which is the ability to work efficiently and effectively. The third quality is integrity which is the practice of universal noble values in all aspects of one’s life. Those who seriously want to be successful volunteers must make a conscious effort to develop the three qualities mentioned.

The three speakers, Datuk Abdullah, Dr Boren and Syed Barkat Ali discussing on potentials

for future collaboration

Lord, thou knowest better than myself that I am growing older and will soon be old. Keep me from becoming too talkative, and especially from the unfortunate habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and at every opportunity.

Release me from the idea that I must straighten out other peoples’ affairs. With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom, it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it. But thou knowest, Lord, that in the end I will need a few friends.

Keep me from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point.

Grant me the patience to listen to the complaints of others; help me to endure them with charity. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains -- they increase with the increasing years and my inclination to recount them is also increasing.

I will not ask thee for improved memory, only for a little more humility and less self-assurance when my own memory doesn’t agree with that of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.

Keep me reasonably gentle. I do not have the ambition to become a saint -- it is so hard to live with some of them -- but a harsh old person is one of the devil’s masterpieces.

Make me sympathetic without being sentimental, helpful but not bossy. Let me discover merits where I had not expected them, and talents in people whom I had not thought to possess any. And, Lord, give me the grace to tell them so.

Amen”
