Vision Plan

Page 19: " In Christ

BACKGROUND

The UCCSA in dialogue with the Council for World Mission (CWM) initiated a visioning process, which involved a broad ranged process of consultations and prayers to address concerns that were bubbling in the soul of the denomination.

This whole idea was initiated by the UCCSA Executive in the Windhoek March 2005 meeting, and was later ratified by the Assembly in September 2005.

Page 20: " In Christ

UCCSA Vision Plan

In 2006 the UCCSA adopted a Vision Plan under the theme – In Christ there is a Future.

The Vision Plan is not a prescription but a catalyst for :

Mission Thinking, Prayer, and Renewal

This plan guides the church in its process of MISSION RENEWAL .

A booklet ‘Tell me the old, old story’ has been designed to assist churches to participate in the renewal process

Page 21: " In Christ

Vision Plan DECLARATION

This declaration is made in faith, in a context that is often

full of desperation and hopelessness. It was in a context

of political and economic despair that our Lord came

and declare ‘Fullness of Life’ (John 10:10), and it is in a

similar situation, where the cries of the poor and the

excluded are ignored, that as bearers of the Good News

we declare that ‘ there is a future’ Rev. Dr. Moiserale Prince Dibeela

General Secretary

We must acknowledge our diversity as a family

Page 23: " In Christ

Vision Plan BELIEFS God creates all people equal and all have the right to fullness of life-

The Holy Spirit gives us a variety of gifts for the enrichment of God’s people

God’s plan

God calls us and empowers us to fulfill God’s purposes

We are called to be faithful stewards

God, through God’s grace, continues to guide and enlighten the church.

There is a future

Identity & Ecclesiology

Page 29: " In Christ

Identity & Ecclesiology

Rationale No Strategy

Focal PointTo be a Church that spans five countries that are economically, politically and culturally different is in itself a huge challenge.

Important Questions How do you keep the whole thing together ?

How do you exercise authority and discipline across sovereign nation states?

How does our ecclesiological self- understanding hinder or facilitate our mission task as a church?

21st Century Challenges

We need to review who we are in the light of the 21st Century Mission Challenges.

What does it mean to be a congregational church today ?

1 To develop a discussion

document on Congregational Polity by 2007

2 Identify a contact person from each synod who will encourage and facilitate the process of studying the document by 2007

3 Document to be studied by local congregations, regions and synods by 2007

4 To hold broad based consultation to engaged theological perspective on congregational ecclesiology by 2008

5 Commemorate the first Sunday of October as the founding of the UCCSA by 2006

Page 30: " In Christ

To strengthen covenant relationships across thefive countries where the UCCSA exists in orderto build higher level of spirituality for a caringand inclusive church

Relationship Issues

Page 31: " In Christ

Relationship Issues

Rationale No Strategy

The UCCSA is rich in its diversity as a Pan-African church as well as a multi-cultural and multi-racial church.

However, one thing that we are increasingly coming to terms with is the sin of ‘structural racism’

We therefore want to avail ourselves to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, so that we can build a caring and inclusive church where we can interact more, live and play and worship together and be in mission together.

1 Create opportunities for inter-synodical and cross- cultural engagement by 2007

2 Declare a specific Sunday for cross cultural pulpit exchange to take place by 2007

3 Develop a course on personal and interpersonal relations by 2008

4 Hold an annual sports extravaganza for the denomination by 2007

5 Provide training on conflict resolution by 2008

6 Raise awareness through pamphlets, discussions and other means on issues of gender, racism, xenophobia, sexuality and people with disabilities within the church and society by 2007

Page 32: " In Christ

To develop a dynamic life-giving church in which

there is a vibrant worship, full participation of

everyone and a genuine response to the needs of

the church and society.

Mission and Evangelism

Page 33: " In Christ

Mission and Evangelism Rationale No Strategy

Spirituality

The church need a particular way of being, of relating, of thinking and acting. We need to re-kindle within us a spirituality of giving, of hospitality , of caring, of including others.

This spirituality will revitalize our local churches and make them pacesetters in living out the faith. It will make us a church of the poor, of people with disabilities, the asylum seeker and those who have been excluded before, emerging communities and uprooted people,

We need to do every thing possible to enable our members to love the scriptures so that they can learn to cultivate a depth in their spiritual journey. (Contd)

1 Develop a study guide around the five Marks of Mission to be used by local congregations :

Proclamation, Nurture and Teaching, Loving Service, Transforming society,

Stewardship of creation)

2 Conduct training sessions on liturgical development for ministers, worship leaders and other local leaders (praise and worship)

3 Hold workshops with local ministers on the use of lectionary text

4 Develop a preaching course for equipping of lay persons

Page 34: " In Christ

Rationale No Strategy

It is also important that we create opportunities for spiritual growth,. Such opportunities could include retreats, outdoor activities, audiotape ministry, study days and meditation.

Youth DevelopmentThere is a concern among many at the diminishing place of children and youths in our churches. In some Synods youths and children are a sad minority and are hardly visible in the activities of the church.

As a denomination we are committed to bring back the youths to their rightful place in the life of the Church.

We need to create opportunities for evangelism, fellowship and cross-cultural engagement - sports and recreation, communication and technology and exchange programmes between Synods / Regions

5 Hold a convocation every two years (in the year without an assembly) to include the whole UCCSA family.

6 Encourage Synods to identify church planting and other outreach opportunities

7 Revive Youth structures and ministry in order to ensure their full participation in the life of the church through leadership training and development, outreach activities and other means.

8 Introduce a denominational Youth Programme called Mission in Southern Africa (MISA)

Page 35: " In Christ

To design and develop training and discipleship

programmes and materials to facilitate leadership

and ministerial formation within the UCCSA and

throughout the wider community.

Training and Discipleship

Page 36: " In Christ

Training and Discipleship.

Rationale No Strategy

The UCCSA ,in terms of ministerial formation, has been left in the cold by the closure of the Federal Theological Seminary (Fedsem) .

We have not found a long lasting solution to the ministerial formation ; meanwhile standards have tumbled down as ministerial candidates have trained at various institutions with very little supervision.

However, the UCCSA at its Assembly agreed to the formation of a Leadership Academy whose role shall be to be a training wing of the denomination.

1 Establishment of a Leadership Academy. *

2 Appoint a group to work with the General Secretary in working out the logistics of the academy.

3 Create a publication department for the production of material resources

4 Recruit and train five (5) candidates for Ministry in the Namibia Synod *

5 Training of fellowship and internship directors of vocation*

Page 37: " In Christ

To rekindle the prophetic responsibility of the

Church in order to enable appropriate response to

political, economic and social injustice

Political, Economic and Social Justice

Page 38: " In Christ

Political, Economic and Social Justice

Rationale No Strategy

The UCCSA comes from a great tradition of being an advocate for justice on behalf and with the underprivileged.

Unfortunately though, in the past few years, we have become more insular and less thorough about justice issues.

However, it is our hope that we can regain this spirituality by re-positioning ourselves in the light of the political, economic and social challenges in our region and globally.

The UCCSA takes these challenges seriously, and is determined to be better prepared for engagement in the justice ministry.

1 Raise awareness of injustices at the local level by making use of local ministers through the use of Bible studies, workshops, literature etc.

2 Provide skills in lobbying and organizing of campaigns and protests against injustice

3 Enable local communities to identify creative alternatives to situations of injustice that leads to unemployment and other forms of oppression

4 Build networks with other organizations that are already involved in social justice issues

5 Creating opportunity for discussion and exposure of empire and economic injustice and ecological

destruction

Page 39: " In Christ

To review the UCCSA Structure in order to

facilitate wide scale participation, effective

communication, a sound administrative

framework and proper use of all resources

Administration and Policy

Page 40: " In Christ

Administration and Policy

Rationale No Strategy

For the UCCSA to be able to effect the Vision Plan Objectives it is important to strengthen our institutional and organizational capacity.

Another matter concerning capacity strengthening has to do with our administrative competence .

We need to put the right policies in place and striving towards good practice in whatever we do.

We also need to be able to perk up our communication methods so that we take our programmes and activities to the people. (contd.)

1 Provide the personnel and financial resources to ensure the implementation, sustainability and evaluation of the strategic plan

2 Appoint a technical group to look at the staff compliment at the Denominational Office which will sustain this vision

3 Create and set-up self financing projects / opportunities to sustain the operations of the denomination

4 Review the system of remuneration of ministers.

5 Support the ongoing initiative to develop a comprehensive retirement policy and effective use of retired ministers

Page 41: " In Christ

Rationale No Strategy

It is our intention to review all our structures in order to determine whether they facilitate or hinder Mission.

5 Marks of Mission

Proclamation, Nurture and Teaching, Loving service, Transforming Society, Stewardship of creation

Key Objectives Leadership Development Mission & Evangelism Stewardship, Oversight

6 Encourage wider circulation of the news letter

7 Re-launch of the Congregational Chronicle

8 Encourage the work being done in establishing the denomination’s website

9 Crete a video / DVD on the UCCSA to serve as an educational tool

10 Conduct an audit of the operational structure of the denomination to determine how effective it is in facilitating participation and mission engagement

11 Develop an equal opportunity policy

12 Develop a manual that includes the UCCSA constitution, procedures, agreements and policies

Page 42: " In Christ

To strengthen the work and witness of the

different Synods by delegating some of the

Vision Plan activities, in order to ensure that our

programmes are able to reach as many

people as possible

Strengthening the work of the Synod

Page 43: " In Christ

Strengthening the work of the Synod Rationale No Strategy

The UCCSA is a Church that covers a wide geographical space across Southern Africa.

One of the obvious limitations of the denominational strategy (such as this one) is, that it require a lot of human power to be able to motivate and execute the programme activities of this plan.

Hence this objective- that seeks to delegate responsibility to Synods to do these Vision Plan Activities on behalf of the denomination.

The focus of the activities under this objective is on Children, Youth, Women empowerment.

1 Strategic Planning and Understanding of the Vision Plan

2 Organize writer’s workshops to develop Christian Education Curriculum for children

3 Establish an outdoor ministries programme for Youth and Children

4 Assist the Mozambique Synod with Mission Outreach programmes, English lessons for ministers and capacity building

5 Strengthening the Synods capacity to deliver

UCCSA Vision Plan

Tell me the old, old story.A booklet dubbed ‘Tell me the old, old story’, has been designed to assist local churches to participate in the renewal process.

It is structured around five (5) marks of Mission:

Proclamation (Tell)

Teaching and Nurturing (Teaching)

Loving Service (Tend)

Transforming Society (Transform)

Stewardship of Creation (Treasure)

Page 54: " In Christ

Guidelines• Through this booklet it is hoped that each

local church will review its life and organize it Mission Plan around the 5 Marks – which point to the inside and outside of the church.

• ‘Tell me the old old story’ gives us an opportunity to gather as local churches to talk and pray (together) about our mission.

Church leaders should create the right platform for full participation of the congregation on these issues.

Page 55: " In Christ

Guidelines Contd.

• Meet once a week or when necessary to discuss this manual.

• Allow for sincere discussion – and do not be in a hurry to finish.

• Photocopy the manual , put it on PowerPoint or read it aloud during sessions.

• Design action points on the 5 Marks.

• Be creative and allow the Spirit to take you to places where you have not been before.

Page 56: " In Christ

Proclamation - TELL

• The story of faith is contagious and an exciting tale that cannot be kept to oneself.

• Generations of Christians over the years have shared in the joy of telling and proclaiming the good news of Christ to others.

Page 57: " In Christ

DISCUSSION

• Explain why you think of the statement that the gospel is contagious ?

• Explain how the good news is told in your church ?

• How can this ministry of Telling the good news be improved ?

• What opportunities are there in your church and community that are not as yet used for spreading the gospel ?

• Have we spent too much time and energy in maintaining our churches than in outreach?

Page 58: " In Christ

DISCUSSION Contd.

PROJECTS • Encourage your deacons and lay preachers to

improve their skills by enrolling for courses through the UCCSA Leadership Academy.

• Organize a renewal week in your church and invite ministers from the UCCSA to be part of this programme. Encourage your members to invite along their friends and neighbours.

• Set up, in collaboration with other churches within your region, a student fellowship for learners tertiary institutions in your area.

Page 59: " In Christ

Teaching and Nurturing – TEACH

• One of the neglected ministries of the church has to do with Teaching and Nurturing. Most churches tend to focus on the Preaching aspect.

• The London Missionary Society used to have a programmed called “ CLASSES”.

Through this programme older people in the church would each have a class of young people that would be under their guidance over a period of time. They would normally meet in the homes, and would discuss a range of issues such as the Bible, growing up, making right choices and career guidance.

• This way the church was involved in character formation . Other forms include the Sunday School and Boys / Girls Brigade

Page 60: " In Christ

DISCUSSION • What Teaching and Nurturing currently exist in your

church ?

• What are some of the old ways that perhaps no longer exists that benefited the church in the past in its Teaching Ministry ?

• What ‘field-training’ did the disciples undertake in the Bible?

• What learning opportunities can you identify in your local church ?

• How does your leadership sharpen their leadership skills ?

• Purchase teaching aid equipment for your church - laptop, big screen, flipchart

Page 61: " In Christ

DISCUSSION Contd.

PROJECTS • Arrange a Sunday School (event) for the whole

church

• Purchase teaching aid and equipment ( laptop, data projector, flipchart stand, screen etc)

• Discuss ways through which your home groups / wards can play a significant role in the teaching ministry of your church.

Page 62: " In Christ

Loving Services- TEND

• One of the most important ministries in the life of the church is that of caring for and expressing Loving Services to those that are in need.

• One of the important aspects of Mission is the obligation for the Church to provide loving care to the needy. The Congregational Church has always taken sides with the poor.

Page 63: " In Christ

DISCUSSION• What part of the life of your church would you classify as Loving

Services?

• What is your dream for your church with regard to its Loving Service ministry?

• What opportunities are there in your community for your local church to express its Loving Services

PROJECTS

• Establish a project in your Local Church to assist the poor in your in your community to access government social services

• Introduce a ‘cup of blessings’ in your services whereby members can donate foods to be distributed to the poor.

Page 64: " In Christ

Transforming Society - TRANSFORM

• God’s mission is also about transforming communities in which we minister. The Church as a community of grace is called to bring a transforming effect that will enhance the quality of life.

• Another important aspect when it comes to mission as transformation,is that the church is called to speak truth to power. Speaking truth to power means that local churches must be equipped to address government policies that are not life-giving.

• One way of doing this is to have a discussion forum to understand what is happening in your community and or region. Through these the local church can be educated about what is happening and therefore be in a position to ‘speak truth to power

Page 65: " In Christ

DISCUSSION

• What are the ways through which your local church could “Speak truth to power’

• What other ways can your local church ‘Transform Society’

PROJECTS

• Organize a lobby group in in your local Church to address social problems that affect your community

• Declare your local church a ‘justice congregation’ and invite the UCCSA Social Justice Team to assist you in this regard

Page 66: " In Christ

Caring for Creation – TREASURE

• Mission is also about caring for creation.

• According to the Old Testament Scriptures, human beings were created and then put in a position of caring for the rest of creation. God made humans to be stewards of creation.

• We should show some respect to trees, water, the sky, rocks, and animals.

• The church can be a place where we teach our communities to treasure the environment

Page 67: " In Christ

Caring for Creation – TREASURE • Treasuring Creation also means caring for our bodies.

Treasuring our bodies would mean that we would not indulge anything that would pose a danger to us – smoking, drinking, illicit sex and eve over-eating that leads to obesity.

Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the

Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God ?

You are not your own; You were bought with a price.

So glorify God in you body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Page 68: " In Christ

DISCUSSION • How do human beings participate in ‘injuring’ or

damaging creation in your community.

• How can your church partner with environmental groups in order to treasure creation.

Projects• Tree-planting• Vegetable gardens • Garden sanctuary with trees and flower rockeries• Anti-littering campaigns • Re-cycling • Educational Programmes

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Philosophy

The Programme Plan should fulfill the following criteria :

• CONTEXTUAL: It should be relevant to the needs of the youth.

• PRACTICAL: It should be activity based-in doing exercises we will be able to see if we can apply what we have learnt.

• SPIRITUAL: It should be Christ centered-every program application of it should lead

to a deeper understanding of God.

• PEDAGOGICAL: There will not only be formal theoretical lectures, but every young person

will also bring his/hers rich experiences to educate one another.
