Genre is a category of music , art or movies. With in these genres of movies etc. there are sub-genres.

Thriller is one of the movie genres , to make a great thriller movie you need certain aspects to thrill the audience and create a suspense. All thriller movies are seeking to excite the audience and create a sense of uncertainty as it builds towards the climax finish.

When audiences watch thrillers , they are there to get a thrill and at the end of the movie leave with a sense of excitement . You go to thrillers to get an adrenaline rush and to make your heart beat because you don’t know what is going to happen next.

Early thrillers started in the early 1920’s-1930’s , most of them directed by Alfred Hitchcock , he shaped the genre of thriller.

Then in 1940 , Hitchcock continued to make thrillers as well as other directors started to make thriller movies.

In the 1950’s thrillers started to improve with glamorous stars and more technology.

In the 1970’s thrillers started to become more explicit and violent.

1990’s to present – the thrillers have become more psychological. For example shutter island.

With in the Thriller genre there is sub genres and hybrid genres. For example there are psychological thrillers , crime thrillers , supernatural thrillers etc. This means that the narrative will have a sense of crime throughout the film or whatever the sub genre is. Hybrid Genres are very similar for example a science fiction thriller is a hybrid genre because the narrative will have both genres in it. For example shutter island is a psychological thriller , it keeps the audience on the edge of its seat as well as being a puzzling and complex film , that really makes the audience use their intelligence to work out the plot.

Timeline of The genre

There are certain narrative conventions in movies. In most Thrillers crime seems to drive the movies , as the plot builds towards the climax. There are also multiple sub plots and enigma codes in the narrative for example cliff hangers. There are secretive elements to some narrative and this drives the plot on. For example in Se7en the police detectives are chasing the antagonist the whole movie , and it drives the movie until the very end.

There are two main characters when it comes to thriller and they are the hero and anti hero or the protagonist or antagonist. In thrillers they use the hero and anti-hero , for example a convict or serial killer with a clever plan , but then there is the protagonist who is there to try and stop the antagonist from doing this clever plan. The protagonist is normally a normal person or a police officer.

Mise en scene is French for placing in the scene. In most thrillers the set is a quite a normal place like a street or a school and everything is fine until something is thrown in to challenge the equilibrium. The set can also be very dark and isolated this sets the mood and creates a tense mood for the audience. Normally the set goes from somewhere normal for example a school to somewhere quite scary and isolated , and the set tries to get an emotional response from the audience. For example in Psycho the Bates Motel is in a secluded isolated place and it adds to theme and mood of the movie.

Characterisation

Camerawork is a major part of a successful thriller. Some of the main camera shots in thrillers are close ups , tracking and pan shots , high angle shots and low angle shots. All these camera shots contribute to the narrative and the audiences feelings. All the camerawork gives the audience a perspective on the characters in the movies. In some thrillers for example in Se7en you never see the antagonists face until near the end , giving the audience a sense of mystery. Also in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s early thrillers Psycho he used loads of different camera angles for one scene in the shower.

The editing is also a main part of a good thriller movie. Obtrusive editing , montage editing , black and white , all different editing techniques used in thrillers. Obtrusive editing gives the movie more suspense and tension. Flashbacks are also used a lot in thrillers and they give the audience a history of what is happening. Black and white is used because it highlights shadows, something that is a main part of thriller.

Sound effects are used to create suspense in the audience , some of the sounds could be loud screeching or screaming . Loud heartbeats , sounds that keep the audience on edge and scared. No sound at all is also another popular sound effect in thriller movies.
