  • Dear Friends, Welcome to 35th Durga Puja of BASC in 2013. We have waited all year long for this auspicious moment in anticipation of being filled with joy and divine peace that accompany both our worship and our festivities. Together let us pray and enjoy every single moment of this celebration with our families and friends. Let us forgive and forget all our differences and come together in worshipping Ma Durga. In the initial months of this year we started planning for our new Pratima. I am extremely happy to announce that this pratima was fully sponsored by our next generation members Tridivesh and Tulika Kidambi. This year they celebrated

the birth of their daughter Jiya. On behalf of BASC committee and all BASC members I thank the family. Per Indian tradition, I also thank their parents Ranga and Rastri Dey Kidambi and Madhusudan and Sikha Kundu. Both these families are also long term BASC members. It shows the passing of BASC tradition from one generation to other. This year we had a lot of festivities. We started with Saraswati Puja. Following the tradition, we had Dol in Bharat Sevashram Sangha. Although we had an initial setback with our landmark classical program in June, we worked hard and rescheduled the event in September. Kaushiki Chakrabortys concert which was a big success like the last years concert. We had a great Annual Picnic in the relaxed environment of English Springs Park with a lot of sports and fun activities. We continued our vision of collaboration with communities. This year we approached Dakshini for mutual collaboration and I am extremely happy that Arnab Chatterjee , president of Dakshini gave us warm support with this. By collaborating we can share volunteers and conduct more cultural programs and charitable activities. We had a very fruitful initial meeting where we worked out a lot of future activities and already implemented several of them. BASC and Dakshini together with Vedanta Society was involved in feeding the homeless people in

Long Beach. BASC and Dakshini conducted a very successful Mahalaya in Bharat Sevashram Sangha where

more than 350 members of both organizations attended. We are now planning a Natyamela in 2014 with San Diego based organization Saikat. We will conduct Dol in 2014 together. In future you will see many collaboration between BASC and Dakshini. These programs and events would not have been possible without your donation. BASC truly appreciates all its sponsors who have been supporting us generously and have been doing so for many years. Lastly, BASC's success is due to its hard working and dedicated volunteers. A big salute and a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers without whom it would not have been possible to organize this years programs and events. We wish each and everyone of you a great Durga Puja and Shubho Bijoya. On behalf of Team BASC,

    Deep Ghosh, President

  • BASC thanks Tridivesh and Tulika Kidambi for sponsoring the

    fourth new Pratima in 2013.

  • BASC Fondly remembers

the friends we lost last year

We are deeply saddened to announce that Manas RoyChowdhuri, Manas da

to some of us, passed away on Thursday, March 28. Manas was fighting multiple my-

eloma, a form of cancer, for several years but his spirit remained strong till the end.

Manas was an incredibly gracious, caring and practical person an inspiration to many

of us Bengalis. The extended BASC family mourns this incredible loss alongside

Manass wife Jayshri , son Jojo, daughter-in-law Himani and granddaughter Ajuni.

    Manas Roy Chowdhuri

Manas was a major sponsor of all things Bengali. He generously donated in all BASC events and always

helped us with his wisdom and practical suggestions.

Manas always wanted a permanent place for the Bengali community in southern California. He helped create

business plans for a Bengali community center and then was instrumental in finding a home for Bharat Sevash-

ram (BSSW) in Brea. He helped financially as well as with his counsel with attorneys, accountants, and donors.

Besides being a major donor, Manas was at the center of many activities in the Brea BSSW temple, including

publication of the BSSW brochure, Newsletter SANJOG, Feed the Hungry program, and so on. His dream was

to make the Brea temple a center for all Bengali religious, philanthropic and cultural activities in Southern Cal-

    ifornia.

Besides his love for entrepreneurship, Manas loved music, theater, arts, dramas, religion, & literature. He

supported many cultural and philanthropic organizations. He was well-liked by all that came in contact with him

and had an incredible zest for life.

We are deeply saddened to announce the demise of Sri Bhola Nath Mazumder who passed away

on Sunday, March 31st at 5:30 AM. He is survived by his wife Champa Mazumder, daughter Simonti

Mukhopadhyay, son-in-law Sanmay Mukhopadhyay, grand daughter Sharanya, grandson Sharthak

    and other relatives and friends.

Bholanath Mazumder was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a highly respected

Horticulturalist in India and had come to the U.S. to study at the University of Illinois for his masters

degree. He had maintained a 5.0 gpa throughout his study and later was given many prestigious

awards for his work and achievement in horticulture. In 2008, Bholanath and Champa Mazumder

came to the U.S. to live with their beloved daughter, Simonti Mukhopadhyay. Throughout the last 5

years, he has been known in our community with various names like "bapi", "dadai", or

"meshomoshai" but regardless of which name came to mind, everyone remembered his smiling

face. His happiness in the small things in life, liking making applesauce from the apples in the back-

yard garden, or feeding the ducks in the nearby pond, or going to the mandir and having some

"mishti" is what made him so cherished. His happiness, his light, his blessings, his smile will live on

in our hearts and we appreciate all of your thoughts, prayers, and good wishes throughout this diffi-

    cult time.

    Sri Bhola Nath Mazumdar

  • Friday Oct 18 , 8:30 PM - Abar Asibo Phirey

The first two decades of this

century will see the convergence of many

seminal milestones in the cultural historyof

the Bengali people: The convergence of

    these paradigm shifting events represents

thinking that maybe analyzed via a set of

    very, very different narratives.

In Abar Ashibo Phirey, we choose to

celebrate them via this one particular

    theme: Conjure the rich history of our past;

Analyze and Criticize the present and then

Transcend to an Optimistic Future. Most of

    the iconic Bengali personalities in

    literature, religion, philosophy, cinema and

social policy followed this pattern of

thinking. This has shaped the Bengali

psyche: in Bengal, in India and in the

    Indian diaspora abroad.

In "Abar Ashibo Phirey" we explore

examples of the theme with drama, music,

    dance and fine arts.

We utilize a multitude of emotions: tragedy,

humor, satire and hope and our timeline

includes the inception of the Bengali Re-

    naissance to Satyajit Ray.

The intellectual trajectory drawn by the

personalities we will showcase are way more

than a part of Bengali cultural history, it

was avant garde for all of humanity. Our aim

is to reflect a bit; remember and maybe

    collectively conceptualize a future.

    Sunday Oct 20 , 2:40 PM - Ajo Kahini by Ajit Bose-Roy

Asok with his wife Kakoli lives in a city in United States. So does Satyaki and Kheyali. Both

the families are part of the local ethnic Bengali community that has a club named Hillol.

While the families are friends with each other, the upcoming election of the executive

members of Hillol has pitched Asok and Satyaki against each other as presidential

candidates. With a hidden ambition of being the First Lady of Hillol, both Kakoli and

Kheyali are involved in getting votes by impressing the Bengali voters with their excellent

culinary skills of pathar mangsho or goat meat items. Unfortunately, FDA has banned the

sale of pathar mangsho due to some unknown reason. Now both the families have to

somehow manage the huge expectation of the goat-meat-hungry Bengali voters. How would

they do that? Who will win the war and be the president of Hillol? The effort and the chaos

that follow are at the heart of Ajo Kahini, or A Goat Story!

  • Right in the beginning Durgapuja was not a open-to-all-by-

all event. Durgapuja first started in Houses of Zamindars.

Thereafter, other families too started the puja in their own

houses and gradually local clubs and organizations took it

over to make it a truly open-to-all event. However, since

pujas in houses of prominent families of Bengal were of the

true original form of worshipping Ma Durga, we'll first

present here the festive atmosphere of that time through

songs and dances. Together well enjoy the gaiety of the

family festivity of that time through the all-inclusive celebration by the participation of

masses -- that carried the message of joy and peace to all of us

Angeles with her kids. Preparations are in full swing both in Kailash and in Los Angeles Bongo Somaj. The "morto" people, however, are really in trouble - everyone has a different

idea about everything and nothing seems to get done. Perhaps the gods can help? Oh, wait looks like Asura has quite an evil plan. But ... we can't tell you that now, can we? Come see

us on October 26 in Duarte and we promise you an LOL, no ROFL time!
