Postal cards. From Wikipedia. Postal cards are postal stationery with an imprinted stamp or indicium signifying the prepayment of postage. They are sold by postal authorities. On January 26, 1869, Dr. Emanuel Herrmann of Austria described the advantages of a Correspondenz Karte. By October 1, 1869 the world's first postal card was produced by Austria-Hungary. They caught on quickly. By the end of 1870, Great Britain, Finland, Switzerland and Wrttemberg joined the countries issuing postal cards. In the United States, they were first produced in 1873. Some of the forms taken by postal cards include the regular single card which may be commemorative or definitive, attached message-reply cards, airmail postal cards, and official postal cards used for official government business with a "penalty for private use". To the post office, there were positive advantages to postal cards as opposed to correspondence in envelopes. The cards were lighter and less bulky than letters and they were all the same size. The result was that they occupied less than one third of the space required by the same number of letters. To the public there were also advantages. They were simple and cheap making them an instant success Britain had a -penny rate to begin with. The U.S. "penny postcard" rate lasted through 1951Presumably for the purpose of getting a prompt reply, a sender was given the opportunity to pay for postage both ways with an attached message-reply card, first introduced by Germany in 1873 Other European countries quickly followed suit. Spain furnished message-reply cards to her Colonies: Cuba (1880), Philippines (1889) and Puerto Rico (1898) The U.S. issued them first in 1892. Message-reply cards were attached tte-bche and likely to be perforated or rouletted to facilitate separation once in the hands of the recipient. The recipient could then tear them apart and use the prepaid reply card to correspond with the original sender. Normally the message card would be identical to the reply card except with the distinction of having additional language such as "WITH REPLY CARD" or "La otra tarjeta es para la respuesta" or "Carte Postale Rsponse" or similar words to distinguish the two. In the U.S., message and reply cards have been identical since 1968The term postal card is clearly differentiated from the term postcard which is a term to designate cards prepared by private companies and which do not have prepaid franking. They are readily available at commercial outlets. The addition of an adhesive stamp is required to mail them. They are frequently illustrated with pictures or printed advertisements. They are not considered postal stationery any more than a plain envelope or sheet of parcel wrapping are. Greek postage stamps issued from 1927 until today which depict images of Mount Athos were presented at a special event organized by the Hellenic Post and the Holy Community of Mount Athos at the Old Parliament.On the occasion of the issuance of the stamp series 100th anniversary of the integration of Mount Athos in Greece, there was a retrospective presentation of stamps with all the images of the Holy Mountain.The Chairman and CEO of the Hellenic Post ELTA, Costis Melachrinos noted that the Greek post offices, during the185 years of their history, have embraced all the major events of Greek history.They have stamped every breath of the Greek soul, they are connected to the environment in which the stations of the great Greek journey were born. The Greek stamps coincided with the sorrows, and good periods of the Greek society in the midst of wars, turmoil, changes and reforms. The Hellenic post captures the key moments of the Greek history in favor of the future generations, he said.

Greek government, the British and their allies began to land troops at, and occupy, the port of Salonica (Thessaloniki). When established there, the British feared that Athos was harbouring German agents. An investigation by 2 Royal Navy officers, Lt. Commanders Luke and Pirie-Gordon, made contact with Mount Athos and greatly impressed the Abbot of Iviron by firing a one-gun salute in his honour. No real evidence of German infiltration was obtained but the Allies considered an occupation of the territory although the Russians eventually vetoed the action. Before that, detailed planning for an occupation was undertaken in December 1915 and January 1916 with Pirie-Gordon to be appointed resident there. Included in Pirie-Gordon's planning was the organisation of postal services and he wished the governing council of Mount Athos to issue its own stamps. He had sheets of stamps printed on board HMS Ark Royal by a photographic method, the designs featuring a Byzantine two-headed eagle with an inset medallion of the Madonna and Child with the inscription "Mount Athos Theocracy" in English, Russian and Greek. The stamps were printed in black on variously coloured papers and in 3 different sizes. Because the occupation never took place, only a few sheets of the stamps survived.

Very interesting item. Mount Athos is a semi-autonomous region of Greece. They started issuing their own Scott-listed postage stamps in 2008 for use in their 2 post offices. But there were precedents: in 1909-1910, Russian stamps were overprinted for use in the Russian Post Office in Mount Athos (see Russia "Russian Offices in the Turkish Empire", Scott 101-116).

And in 1916, Greece N150-166 were overprinted for use in Mount Athos, but they were not issued. They fall in the category of "prepared but not issued" stamps. Your document is especially interesting because is shows a genuine fiscal usage of local revenue stamps in a "country" with very little population liable to use them. Of course, Turkish Revenue or postage stamps used in Mount Athos are rare and highly desirable.

1916 1/2p to 1/- Mount Athos, a series of nine different stamps, including two different colors each of the 2 1/2p and 1/-, this issue is unusual in a number of

respects, they were produced in a photographic process (in sheets of twelve for each value), and there are three different countries' languages and denominations incorporated into the design, Greek, Russian and English, these came about during World War I because of a planned allied takeover of the Copy Mountain District of Mount Athos

these stamps were prepared to be used at the local native post office, similarly, a set of British stamps overprinted "Levant" were prepared for the British Consular Post Office (S.G. #S1-8), when the project was abandoned neither of these issues were used for their intended purpose, the overprinted British stamps went to the Army Field Post in Salonica where they were sold and used, nearly all of the stamps for the local post office were destroyed making them extremely rare, in addition, the British naval officers responsible for the project made a very few covers that went through the Salonica Field Post Office, stamps are cancelled by a prepared Greek "Agion Oros/25.1.1916" (the intended day of issuance) and with "Field Post Office/G.X/2 MR 16" c.d.s. on the cover, a red censor marking also ties three of the stamps, this cover is addressed to Lieut. Commander Pirie-Gordon on the H.M.S. "Exmouth", only three such covers are recorded with these issues, and this is the only one with all nine values, tiny tear at bottom, otherwise very fine; ex-Pirie-Gordon Collection.

First cover from Mount Athos . I recently posted an article about a set of stamps issued by Mount Athos early this year. Im not proud to show you the first cover that I received from there. It is a very simple one, bearing on the stamps of the set I showed in my previous post. The cancel is not very clear but Im still happy since this is the first time I get a letter from this part of the world. I also take this opportunity to share with you the second part of the series about the biodiversity of the Mount Athos. It was issued on the 21st of June 2010 and contains again five stamps picturing fauna and flora in the same style than the first part.

The first stamp pictures the Mount Athos' pansy (Viola athois) a species of wildflower endemic to Mount Athos.

I personally have some doubts about the real postal needs for stamps issuedspecifically for Mount Athos.

Athos is a small and narrow mountainous peninsula in the Greek region of Macedonia

where lies Mount Athos with its steep and densely forested slopes reaching up to 2,033 meters. A World Heritage Site, it is home of twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries (which are presently inhabited by some 1,400 monks) and forms a self-governed monastic state within the sovereignty of the Hellenic Republic. It is also known as Agion Oros in Greek (meaning Holy Mountain in English). Since 2008, the Hellenic Postal Service issues stamps for postal use only at the two post offices of Mount Athos. The first set of five stamps was issued on the 16th of May 2008 and was followed by several others in 2008 and 2009. Since May 2008, the Mount Athos Monastic Community started issuing its own stamps and that year released five sets of five stamps depicting the Athonian monasteries. The 2, 42 stamp shows the Holy Monastery of Konstamonitou issued on November 7, 2008.

It's funny but I had only learned of Mount Athos as a stamp issuing entity about 5 or 6 weeks ago and had contemplated how to go about getting a postcard ...

Mount Athos is a mountain in northern Greece. Politically it is known as the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1988 and is home to 20 Eastern Orthodox Monasteries. Mount Athos is only accessible by boat and while visitors are restricted , only males can enter. The card shows Simonos Petra Monastery . It is built on a huge single rock , hanging from a cliff 300 meters over the sea.As I mentioned earlier, Mount Athos is the world's newest stamp issuing entity. In May of 2008 the Hellenic Postal Service started issuing stamps for use only at the two post offices of Mount Athos ( Karyai and Dafi ). One set of 5 stamps was issued at that time. A second set of 5 was issued in June 2008. In 2009 4 sets of 5 stamps were issued and now thanks to Bob Lamb, I am lucky enough to own a single Mount Athos stamp. The stamp on the right is a Mount Athos stamp from 2009 . The other stamp is a Greek stamp used just to make up the new postcard rate. It's funny but I had only learned of Mount Athos as a stamp issuing entity about 5 or 6 weeks ago and had contemplated how to go about getting a postcard from there. Unbeknown to me, a card was already on the way.
