Familiar and unfamiliar Britain
THE FIRST PAGE OF OUR RADIO ALMANAC IS
ABOUT SCOTLAND
Scotland is a country of great variety with its own unique character and
strong traditions. It is a very beautiful country famous for the diversity іts
landscapes. Scottish lakes, called "lochs", are surrounded by picturesque
hills and mountains. The most famous of the Scottish lochs is Loch Ness,
because оf the mystery of its monster. It is not the largest lake in Britain,
but it is 35 km long. The water of the lake is dark and always very cold.
The chronicler of the 6th century was the first to report about a strange
creature who was 30 yards long, with two humps in its back, the head of
a snake, a giraffe-like neck and two very short front legs. People called
the water monster Nessie. The articles about it appeared in the news from
time to time.
In 1934 the first book about the Loch Ness monster was published.
Scientists also got interested in discovering the truth. In 1987 they
crossed the lake using sonar equipment but didn't find Nessie.
Nevertheless they did not deny the fact that there was a large moving
object in the lake.
The Loch Ness monster is a real attraction for people from all parts of
Britain and from many other countries. A museum was opened in
Scotland several years ago. It has more than 4,000 written reports and
drawings of Nessie made by the people who "had seen" it.
THE SECOND PAGE OF OUR RADIO ALMANAC IS
ABOUT WALES
It is a small country but there is no other part of the British Isles where
national spirit is stronger, national pride more intense or national
traditions more cherished than in Wales.
The 800-year-old National Eisteddfodd, an annual festival of Welsh
music and poetry has been held early in August since the 12th century. It
attracts Welsh people from all over the world. Welsh is the official
language of the festival. The program includes male choirs, brass-band
concerts, many children’s events, drama, arts and crafts.
The most impressive ceremony of the festival is the crowning of the
Bard. When the best poet's name is called, he comes forward to the
platform. There he is given a purple robe to wear. A crown of golden oak
leaves is placed on his head. He is treated with the highest honour and
respect for the whole year: he is the king of poets.
THE THIRD PAGE OF OUR RADIO ALMANAC IS
ABOUT ENGLAND
England means different things to different people. To some of them it is
"a fortress built by nature", to some — "a foggy Albion". Some people call
it "the workshop of the world", others — "a land of sleepy rural beauty".
One of the oldest prehistoric monuments and one of the wonders of the
world can be found here. It is Stonehenge. The monument consists of two
circles of huge stone blocks. Inside them there are two groups of stones in
the shape of a horseshoe. There is no written record of their origin and
they have always been surrounded by mystery. It is a ritual monument of
Druids used for performing mystic rites at dawn on Midsummer Day (24 th
June). On June 21st the longest day of the year, the rising sun faces the
open part of the horseshoe and shines on the centre stone. The word
Stonehenge probably derives from Saxon and means "a place of the
hanging stones". Scientists think that the early inhabitants of Britain were
sun-worshippers; they thought of the sun as a god and they built
Stonehenge in honour of that god.
There are many theories explaining Stonehenge's function, ranging
from a place of ritual human sacrifice to a very early astronomic
observatory. But even today the reason for its existence is mysterious.
THE FOURTH PAGE OF OUR RADIO ALMANAC IS ABOUT
NORTHERN IRELAND
There is an old Irish saying that Ireland must be the cleanest place
in the world, because God washes it every day. Ireland is also called the
Emerald Isle because of its beautiful green fields.
Everybody knows that the national emblem of Ireland is a
shamrock. It illustrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish.
Inside the shamrock there is a red hand. Why is it here? The legend tells
us that 3,000 years ago two Viking chiefs went with their men in big
boats to Ireland. They decided that the man who would touch the Irish
land first would be the king of it. When the boats were quite near the
land one of the chiefs cut off his right hand and threw it over to the land.
His hand touched the land, first and he became the king of Ireland.
So, it was the last page of our radio almanac in which we tried to
tell you some interesting, unfamiliar and useful facts about the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The world around me".

Teacher: Can you sing together?
Do you like ice-cream? Are you Peter? Is this girl Ann? Have you a pet?
6. White geese game.Teacher: Children, what are your favourite Ukrainian games? Teacher: We have the guests from the USA here. Let's show them our games. Let's play one
national game. It's "White geese". All of you will be white geese. Who wants to be a mother? Who wants to be a wolf?
Mother. My dear geese! Do you want to eat? Fly home, please!Geese: We can't. A grey wolf wants to eat us.Wolf: I'm hungry. Mother: My dear geese! Wolf: Гт very hungry. Mother (до гусей, які повернулися додому): Eat and drink! Fry to the grass-field again.
7. Simon says.Teacher: Children, do you know any English games? Let's play a game "Simon says". If I say "Simon says", do the actions, if I don't say these words, stand still. Let's start.
Simon says: Clap your hands! Clap your hands again! Touch your hair! Touch your hair, please!
Touch your nose!Raise your hands! Go to the door! Go to the door, please! Clap your hands three times! Clap your hands again!
8. Guessing game.Teacher: Well done! You can play games. Can you guess a puzzle? Let's try this one. Look at thetail of the toy. Can you guess what it is?
Teacher: It's fine. You know a lot of toys. What's your favourite toy? Now let's have a competition. Can you work in 2 teams? Your task is to form new words to every letter of the word "favourite". Do it in a quick tempo!
9. Listen to a fairy tale.Teacher: You've played much today. Let's sit together and listen to a fairytale. It's a Ukrainian tale "Mitten". Act out this fairy-tale, using hand-outs.
Once a grandfather and his dog were walking in the wood. On his way grandfather lost his mitten.

and said, "Who lives in this house?" Children, tell me please, who lives there? A mouse, a frog, a hare, a wolf and a fox.
What did the animals say? Yes, "Come in, please". The bear wanted to live in the house. He
came into the mitten. It was very warm in the mitten. But grandfather and his dog were already looking for the mitten. They came to the mitten and the dog said, "Bow! Bow! Bow!" Children, what did the dog say? And out of the mitten ran away (учитель просить разом назвати тварин) a mouse, a frog, a hare, a wolf, a fox and a bear! The dog took grandfather's mitten into his mouth and brought it to him. Grandfather put his mitten on and went home. Show, please, how he did it. Task. Ask your parent or elder brother to cut out these animals.
Tasks: Draw a road in the wood. Colour this mitten.
Find similarities and differences in two pictures. Finish the picture drawing necessary things.
Teacher: Now have a look at these two pictures. What's wrong in the second picture?
Teacher: Who wants to draw this animal? Let's say an English counting rhyme and see who'll draw it?
Repeat every line after me in chorus.
Ickle, pickle, Nickle, muckle,Huckle, buckle, Nickle, muckle,Shuckle in my shoe. Out goes you.
Take a crayon and paint the hare's ears. You are a great artist. Thank you.

You are a winner. You will draw a tail of a fox. But do it with your eyes blindfolded.
